Concrete penetrometers give an instant field or laboratory estimate of concrete initial set, beyond which it can no longer be effectively consolidated. It is particularly useful in determining the effect on setting time of admixtures in the concrete, where these may have been introduced specifically to increase or decrease the setting time.
